In-conversation with Adam White, Bloodstock Manager at Vinery Stud
Pedigree Matters
Testa Rossa is the dam sire of Global Glamour, one of the top horses who was expected to run in the Everest. The Magic Millions filly is trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Testa Rossa is a multiple Gr.1 winning, contemporary and great rival , both on and off the track, of Redoute's Choice. Secretariat’s World interviews the bloodstock manager at Vinery Stud, Adam White to find out more about Testa Rossa.
Q- Tell us a bit about yourself – where were you born, where did you grow up and go to school and what were your early interests?
A- I was born in Adelaide but grew up in the South East area of South Australia, not far from Mount Gambier. I grew up in a racing family as my mother was a trainer and my father was jockey. At a young age I developed an interest in the breeding side of the industry.
Q- As a top breeder, please tell us a little about your philosophy about bloodlines as to what makes it good?
A- At Vinery we try to breed horses that will be successful in two areas; firstly they need to be very marketable at the sales, and secondly they need to perform well on the racetrack. Over recent years we have achieved that and the farm has bred or sold horses such as Atlantic Jewel, Samaready, Delectation, Russian Revolution, Commanding Jewel, Shamus Award, etc.
Q- Please tell us about TESTA ROSSA as a horse as well as a stallion.
A- Testa Rossa was a very popular racehorse when he was racing, winning a total of six Group 1 races from 1000m to 1600m. As a stallion he has been very successful, he has a huge winners to runners ratio and has produced numerous Group 1 winners from sprinters to Derby winners. He is also really starting to make a name for himself as a dam sire now as Global Glamour is from one of his daughters.
Q- What has been your greatest moment / sense of achievement as a breeder?
A- I guess just the consistency in good horses being produced on this farm is our greatest asset.
Q- What gets you out of bed in the morning? Is there any ultimate goal that will fulfill all your aspirations as a breeder?
A- Seeing the new born foals every morning and seeing them develop and grow into athletes. Then seeing them perform well around the country as well as overseas is very satisfying.
Q- And lastly, with racing/ breeding a pretty all-consuming pastime, what are your interests outside of racing?
A- Watching all forms of sport. And just spending time with the family is very enjoyable.
