The Baron’s Pouring On Super Saturday
Group One Sun Met winner Whisky Baron will renew rivalry with the Mike de Kock-trained Janoobi in the Gr1 Jebel Hatta over 1800m at Meydan on Super Saturday. Secretariat’s World asked trainer Brett Crawford about his journey to the Dubai World Cup and beyond.
Q: How Whisky Baron doing and how are his preparations going?
A: He has had a great prep, has improved from his debut and I am expecting a competitive run.
Q: Looking back why do you think he did not do as well in his last race as he could have. What are your thoughts around the performance?
A: Due to the quarantine and travel these horses arrived in Dubai going to need a run or two to become match fit.
Q: What are you plans for whisky baron post Dubai World Cup?
A: Possibly the Hong Kong QE II
Q: When was he bought and from where? How did he come to race in South Africa?
A: He was purchased at the Inglis Easter sale by Ridgemont, who race in South Africa. Hence the reason he came back.
Q: Is this your first Dubai World Cup? Do you have any concerns for whisky baron? When do you fly out yourself into Dubai?
A: Yes, this is the first. I have been back and forth a few times during the carnival already.
Q: What can you tell us about breeding and the growth of racing in sa?
A: Breeding in South Africa is healthy, farms continue to acquire better mares and are always looking to improve our stallions. If we can sort the export protocol I believe you will see many more South African horses on the world stage.
Q: What is Whisky Baron’s personality like?
A: He is a very laid back, relaxed horse and a pleasure to work with.
