In-Conversation With Rodney Schick, Stud Master & Co-Owner, Windsor Park Stud
Windsor Stud stands some of New Zealand's top stallions including Mongolian Khan, Charm Spirit, the highest-earning son of sire sensation Invincible Spirit, Savabeel, Rip Van Winkle, Tavistock and others.
The Impact is chatting to Rodney Schick about his 2019 draft for the Karaka National Yearling Sale:
Q: As one of the vendors bringing the most number of horses to sale, what do you think buyers can expect from your 2019 draft, both in terms of quantity and quality?
A: We will be represented by 41 yearlings in this year's Book 1 sale at Karaka Our draft consists of yearlings by exciting first season sire and triple Gr.1 winner Mongolian Khan. We are also represented by promising young sires ShamExpress and Charm Spirit, as well as proven sires, Savabeel, Rip Van Winkle, Tavistock & our own sales graduate So You Think.
Q: If I’m looking for something special in your draft where should I start?
A: Start at the start, Lot 25 and keep going!
Q: Which sires among the young lot (in the southern hemisphere) are you most hopeful about?
A: We’re represented by three young sires, Mongolian Khan, ShamExpress & Charm Spirit who is first equal leading sire in Europe this season.
Q: What have been your Karaka Yearling Sale highlights, in the past?
A: The highlight for me is seeing the horses we sell go on to be top racehorses on the track, for example, Might And Power, So You Think, Aerovelocity & Debt Collector amongst many others.
Q: What are the main factors you consider when planning matings?
A: Type is important but also keeping genetic strengths consistent with their pedigree.
Q: How has technology affected and influenced your business?
A: Technology has become a very useful tool on our stud being able to carry all records for the horses in the palm of your hand.
Q: And finally what would you say defines the most commercial yearling a breeder could produce?
A: Being by the best stallion, out of the best mare & be a great type! Get all three ingredients and you’ve hit the jackpot!
