Phill Cataldo is one of the most experienced bloodstock agents in the Southern Hemisphere. It is probably very little he has missed during his career. Last year Cataldo was one of those top buyers at the Karaka Yearling Sale.
In this exclusive interview, Phill chats to The Impact about his plans & expectations for the 2019 edition of the same sale and much more:
Q: Which horse/ yearling purchased by you, would you say has given you the most satisfaction?
A.Better Than Ever was a special horse purchased in junction with champion trainer Laurie Laxon from Blandford Lodge. He was champion 3yo and 4yo in Singapore, he won 3 Group One races and his first 12 starts in a row.
Q: As a person who prefers purchasing proven racehorses what do you look for when you buy young yearlings?
A: Athleticism, movement, temperament, conformation.
Q: Which sires among the young lot are you most hopeful about?
A: Of the first season N.Z. sires I like –
- Contributor - I like the way they move
- Mongolian Khan - they look like developing into classic staying 3yos
- Sweynesse - his stock has the presence
Q: What have been your Karaka Yearling Sale highlights?
A: Buying the last two Derby winners - Gingernuts and Vin De Dance.
Q: What energises you and brings you excitement?
A: Buying Group One winners and seeing the owners elation.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
A: Success only comes before work in the dictionary.
