With a proud family tradition of producing outstanding drafts of yearlings, Sledmere Stud will head to the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the pinnacle of all yearling sales in the south hemisphere, with a draft of 15 high-quality, conformed and pedigreed yearlings.
Past yearling sale graduates for the farm include Politeness, a daughter of Street Sense who went on to claim the Group 1 Myer Classic at Flemington, while the likes of recent stakes performers include Alfolk, Gold Fever, Causeway Girl, Ready To Attack, Anjaal, Invincibella, Futooh, Spring Heat, Buckinghampshire and Cautious.
In 2019, the draft is comprised of 11 fillies and four colts, many by proven sires including Sebring, Pierro, Medaglia d’Oro, Snitzel, I Am Invincible and Exceed And Excel, while up and coming you sires include Vancouver and Dissident.
The first of the draft to enter the ring is Lot 15, a lovely chestnut filly by Choisir out of an Encosta de Lago half-sister to the Listed winner Vezalay from the family of dual Group 3 winner Royal Discretion and the multiple South African stakes winner Sir Frenchie, while the second yearling to sell is Lot 27, a son of the ill-fated Hinchinbrook out of the Group 1-winning Cape Cross mare Gaze. A half-brother to the Sledmere Stud bred and sold Ready To Attack, a stakes winner in South Africa before being crowned Horse of the Year during 2017 in Mauritius, this colt is also a half-brother to the multiple-winning Street Gaze, a daughter of Winx’s sire Street Cry.
A handful of lots later, the exciting Sebring x Golden Millennium filly will be offered as Lot 32. A full-sister to the stakes winner Futooh, who was purchased by Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell Stud a few years back from our draft, it’s the family of stakes winner Sweet And Candy, Silverstream, Speedy Natalie and Miss Kariba – all fillies.
An exciting young sire whose oldest are just four, Lonhro’s Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Pierro is proving to be a hot commodity with his yearlings and Lot 63 is a filly with an impeccable pedigree. Out of the winning Fastnet Rock mare Irish Sea, a full-sister to Group 3 winner Ennis Hill and her full-sister Lake Geneva, a Listed winner who also finished third in both the Group 1 Golden Slipper and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, the granddam of this filly is the Group 2 winner Hips Don’t Lie.
Woodman mare Laetitia has been a great producer for Sledmere Stud with six of her seven to the races winning, highlighted by four stakes performers, and Lot 84 is a colt out of the mare from the second crop of Sebring’s Horse of the Year Dissident. As the half-brother to the Group 1-producing sire Stryker, this colt has the pedigree to be a stallion prospect himself.
Achieving his 22nd Group 1 winner recently through 3yo colt Crown Prosecutor was the world-class sire Medaglia d’Oro, and Lot 129 is a lovely grey filly by the son of El Prado, the first foal of the Group 3-winning, Group 1 fourth placed Statue Of Liberty mare Miss Steele.
Champion Sire Snitzel is one again experiencing a tremendous season and Lot 158 is a prime example of the quality the sire produces. Out of the Minardi mare Ocean Of Tears, the colt is a half-brother to the Group 3 winner No More Tears and is closely related to Lot 63 that we will offer earlier in the sale.
Back to back Snitzel yearlings from our draft sees Lot 166, a chestnut filly by the Champion Sire out of the well-related Street Cry mare the next to be offered. From the family of Group 1 winner Laisserfaire, a Champion in South Africa, as well as the Group 1 producing sire Time Thief, this filly is sure to held in high regard.
Golden Slipper winner Vancouver is the sire of Lot 189, with the filly the first foal of the Group 1 Robert Sangster winner Precious Gem, from the family of Group 1 winners Hot The Roof, Turffontein, Alynda, Penny Gem and Ivory’s Irish.
From the family of this season’s Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor and the exciting Group 3-winning juvenile McLaren, Lot 224 is a filly by Champion 2YO Sire Written Tycoon out of the Al Maher mare River Pebbles.
A Champion Sire in his own right, Lot 310 is a daughter of Exceed And Excel, the first foal of the Listed-winning Pins mare Time Me Down, from the family of last season’s Group 1 Australian Derby winner Levendi.
Like Lot 32 that sells early on day one of the sale, Lot 335 is a daughter of the ill-fated Sebring. Out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Why Be Discreet, this filly is from the famed ‘Discreet’ family which includes stakes winners I’m Discreet, Serenely Discreet, Very Discreet, Maybe Discreet and many, many more.
Another filly sure to create plenty of interest is Lot 371, a daughter of I Am Invincible out of the Group 2-winning Stravinsky mare Ballet Society, herself a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Cent Home and the Group 2 winner Studebaker.
One of three Snitzel yearlings in the draft, Lot 345 is a colt out of the Super Saver half-sister to Listed winner I Have No Fear, both daughters of the juvenile stakes winner Countess Christie.
From one of the best families in the stud book, we could have saved the best until last with Lot 414, a filly by Sebring out of the well-related Encosta de Lago mare Crystal Flute, from the family of Group 1 winners Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain, Shoals, Platinum Scissors, He’s No Pie Eater, Hurricane Sky and Umatilla.
With an exciting draft set to cater for buyers on all levels, the yearlings set to be offered on April 9 and 10 epitomise almost two and a half years of hard work from the planning of the mating’s, covering the mare, getting the mare in foal, day to day up keep of the mare, foaling down, weanling, handling and yearling preparation to present an individual in best possible condition for their grand final day, the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
