In-Conversation With Bruce Slade, General Manager, Newgate Stud
Although Newgate Stud is a relatively new stud, it is recognized as a leading stud Farm standing many of leading Australian sires, including Capitalist, Menari, Dissident, Deep Field, Flying Artie, Extreme Choice, Sizzling Super One, Wandjina. The list now includes Russian Revolution as well, which was secured by the Newgate team, in at the recent Chairman’s Sale.
The Impact speaks to Slade about their purchase as well as his vision and plans for the stud.
Q: When Newgate was awarded the consignment for Maastricht and did you expect that they would bring such high-values?
A: Maastricht was not a surprise. It is very rare for a mare to leave one as special as Loving Gaby at her first attempt. She is young, beautiful and successful. We were delighted that she found a lovely home in Coolmore Australia.
Q: What are your plans for the Russian Revolution? Will the stallion be used primarily for Newgate's own broodmare band or will he be made available to outside mare owners as well?
A: He is a horse with a very supportive shareholder group including China Horse Club, SF Bloodstock, Hollymount Stud, Go Bloodstock, G1G Racing and Breeding, David Wallace, and his breeder Brian Backshall. Between them, they have supported him heavily with some of the best mares in Australia, but we have also made up to 120 nominations available to other top Australian breeders who are keen to support Russian Revolution at stud.
Q: What are the factors you take into consideration when buying a stallion?
A: We just look to increase our chances of producing successful stallions as much as possible by standing stallions with elite class athletic ability. We like their physiques and pedigrees to tell all of their rare racetrack ability.
Q: How do you decide which consignments to take on and how far in advance are they booked?
A: We only target fillies and mares that we feel are attractive and worthwhile breeding prospects, and we work on securing these well-credentialed mares right up until the close of entries for each respective sale.
Q: When you joined Newgate, one of the key responsibilities on your shoulders was to manage the Stallions and Consignment business. Given that Newgate is breaking records, you seem to be flourishing at the role. What's on your bucket list in the next few years for Newgate?
A: To double our impact in both of these key aspects of our business with a view to ultimately creating a legacy of Champion stallions who can call Newgate home.
