Galloping To Glory.
"Attention to detail" is what the bio on her website kimwaugh.com.au claims to be her top quality and we very well agree. Her success is a testimony to her dedication and meticulous care. But how does this all work out? How does Kim train all these winners? Whether it is ready to racehorse or a yearling, how does she always get it right? While it does look magical, it isn't exactly magic, instead of a method. A very well thought of and executed a plan. A trait she shares with her legendary husband Mark Waugh, former Australian cricketer.
We wanted to find out the mechanism behind the resounding success that Kim is and I think we were able to do just that during our conversation with Kim. She let it all out in this interview where we speak on various topics like her decision making, a favourite horse, the plans and her last big buy.
Join us as we look to foray in the mind of Kim Waugh.
Q: Did you pay a top price for one of the horses at last year's sale Ready2Race? Where the horse is now, and how is he doing?
A: Street Scream – he raced twice for a win, and a close-up 2nd and is now being sent to Hong Kong to continue his racing career.
Q: What did you feel about the year's catalogue? What are your buying plans for this year? What kind of horse's type, pedigree, performance and physical attributes are you looking for?
A: Once again, there is plenty of quality. I look for athletic, correct types whether it be the sprinting or the staying kind.
Q: When you decide to buy a horse, whether its a yearling or a ready-2-race horse, what is your process from the time the catalogue comes out to the day of the sale?
A: Go through the catalogue and research the pedigrees then make a shortlist for inspections.
Q: Who is the best horse in your stable currently? (Please tell us a bit about him or her?)
A: We have a couple that is showing excellent potential including some well-bred 2yo's, but we do have a Rubick 3yo called Erno that is leading the way. Erno has had 6 starts for 3 wins and 2 seconds and an unlucky 5th. He has been nominated for the $1,000,000 Bondi Stakes for 3yo's over a mile to be run at Randwick in late October.
Q: Are you planning to come down for The Everest? From the current field if you had to pick the trifecta who would you choose?
A: Yes. Pierata/Santa Ana Lane and Bivouac

A: Kingston Town – a magnificent looking horse and a champion.
