In Conversation With Ben Ahren
Not precisely an up and comer, because Ben Ahren is already one of the big names in the business, however, we still would stick our neck out and say that you are going to hear this name more and more in the coming years. A bachelors degree in Exercise Science complemented by a masters in Physiotherapy makes Ben stand out when it comes to credibility and reliability.
This application of his education and wisdom gained from his family is why he had been able to stand out.
This year he has a draft of 11 horses that are nothing short of a visual treat. We were keen to more about these beauties, and we did. However, we also wanted to get more scoop on his process, whether is it concerning his training, his mentality or how he plans the matings.
Read on to know all of this.
Q: You have a high draft of 11 horses this year. Please tell us more about your highlight lots?
A: All our horses were sourced from the Inglis Classic sale after a thorough inspection process. We are delighted with the progress of all our horses, but Lot 134 is a horse with a family on the move. He is a cracking grey colt by Medaglia D'Oro, from the female family of Everest slot holder 'Classique Legend' and Hong Kong's future star 'Aether'.
Q: How long have you been involved with horses and horse sales? Could you please tell us about the most expensive horse you ever bred and sold?
A: Epsom Lodge has been active as a vendor since 2004. We have had several good results as a vendor of 'Ready to Run' horses. However, 2019 is the first year we have focused on sourcing, preparing and selling a draft at the Inglis Ready to Race sale.
Q: What sales do you usually aim to attend every year?
A: Epsom Lodge attends all sales to buy to race.
Q: Do you breed for overall athleticism or specific races?
A: At Epsom Lodge, we breed to race. We intend to maximise the potential of our broodmares through compatible matings on
pedigree, type and cross.
Q: How do you plan your matings? How far in advance do you expect the couplings?
A: Most of our matings are compatible matings according to the 'Brain Rating System'. Our mares are analysed every few years.
Q: Although it's tough to predict, as a breeder, which pedigree lines do you place the most stock of future successes in?
A: In our opinion, it is far safer to react to the pedigree lines having success, rather than predicting them.
Q: Which was your most favourite horse from your stable of all time and where is he/she now?
A: We don't have any specific favourites; we are happy with our horses reaching their potential, whether that means stakes
