Luke and Mags Anderson spent their early years managing premier Australasian studs, including Sir Patrick Hogan’s famed Cambridge Stud and Graeme Rogerson’s Dormello Stud before they started Maluka Thoroughbreds
The Impact speaks to Luke Anderson about Maluka’s 2019 draft for the Inglis’Premier Yearling Sale.
Q: What do you think buyers can expect from your 2019 draft?
A: What Maluka has to offer at InglisPremier sale 2019 is our best draft yet. We have been able to source athletes from both Australia and New Zealand. Our draft of 31 consists of 19 different sires. On both breeding and type, we have all distances represented, from precocious strong 2YO types to athletic stayers.
Q: If I’m looking for something special in your draft where should I start?
A: Special lots in our draft include a Proisir x Midnight Revels colt lot 310. He is a 1/2 brother to our past graduate and Group 1 winner Seabrook. The stallion is off to a great start to his career with an impressive last to the first winner at TeRapa last week. Great type and attitude.
Maluka has a Hinchinbrook x Artful Whisper colt lot 54. He is a full brother whispering Brook, multiple Group 2 winning sprinter who ran a 3rd in the One Thousand Guineas Group 1. Big strong impressive colt and his sire Hinchinbrookjust has the Hong Kong superstar sprinter Beat The Clock win a Group 1recently. We have a Zoustarx SaffieDarling colt lot 425 who is an outstanding type and his mother is a half-sister to Sacred Kingdom (Champion Hong Kong sprinter four years in a row) and Zoustaris the hottest young sire in the land. Lot 506 is a Tavistock x Tricia’o colt. He is an outstanding type with a big walk and athleticism.
Q: What do you mean, when you say, that Maluka prepares horses in the ‘natural way’?
A: Maluka prides itself on producing sound,(in mind and body), yearlings that are going to stand up to training. We don't put pressure on the developing weaning/ yearling body and let them naturally progress through the prep. The yearlings have time out in their paddocks every day and are allowed to grow the 'Natural Way'.This formula was practised by Mags in her yearling manager capacity at Cambridge stud for 10 years and the results speak for themselves. In the last year alone, Maluka has seen from our limited number of runners Seabrook (G1 2yr old Champagne Stakes winner), Perast(multiple G3 winner), Jericho Missile (last week’s WA Magic Millions 2yr old winner), Hard Empire (G3 placed), Tavidance (Listed-placed) and rising HongKong star and winner of 3 from 3, Full Of Beauty).
Q: How has technology affected and influenced your business?
A: Technology has enabled us to be more efficient and assist in communication with both clients and potential buyers.
Q: If you could work on only one project for the next year, what would it be?
A: The project I would work on next year would be selecting athletes from weanling sales and out of the paddock, buying them to re-offer at Premier 2020. We love the challenge of developing these youngsters and understand that the end goal is to achieve racetrack success. From that, the good sales will follow.
Q: When you’re not working how do you like to spend your time?
A: When I’m not working, which is hardly ever… I love having good quality time with my wife and kids, it doesn’t matter what we are doing really. I do enjoy playing/ watching sports with my two boys johnny 10 and Zac 9. And of course, studying catalogues and watching the racing.
Q: In previous years, which of your biggest giveaways has proved to be a topliner-later?
A: Our biggest giveaway that has performed at the top would be Hard Empire. Sold for $11,000. 23 stars 8 wins and ran second in a Group 3.
The breeders in Australia know this. In the main, they are very professional and understand the climate, and have produced a really good product this year, despite the worst drought in decades. I take my hat off to them they have done a great job during this most difficult of times.
