Q: What is your opinion of the 2019 MM Gold Coast catalogue? And are there any first sire yearlings in the catalogue that we should be keeping an eye on?
A: This year’s catalogue is interesting in that we see a lot of Better Than Ready Yearlings being sold. He has been our leading sire in the last 12 months and it will be intriguing to see if they can race on as 3yo’s
Q: Who was the most expensive horse you have ever purchased, for yourself and for a client?
A: The most expensive colt I bought was 150k for a Spirit of Boom Colt Last year for a client
Q: Where is the horse you purchased (as a yearling) last year now?
A: He has just started his second prep in the stables. Had one start as an immature 2YO and has developed nicely
Q: Which young sires do you feel will become valuable in the next few years?
A: I have a lot of time for the Super One Yearlings. I also don’t mind the Rich Enuff yearlings on type
Q: Which sires do you always keep a lookout for as a good return for your yearling investment?
A: This sale quite often has proven Sires that can throw a good type but not be fashionably bred on the dam side. Jet Spur and Bradburys Luck come to mind as did Sequalo before passing away.
Q: How long have you been coming to MM Gold Coast
A: I’ve only been training 3 years but I’ve always enjoyed going to the sales and testing my judgement on prices and value for money.
Q: Has technology affected and influenced your business?
A: Most certainly has. The business now has completely changed with Technology and we have to embrace it or get lost in it all.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
A: Work Hard
Q: Which is the best horse you have ever trained?
A: Boomsara
Q: Which particular yearling in recent years gave you the most pleasant surprise with the sale price?
A: Boomsara. He was a steal at A$45k. Also bought Ours to keep and Skate to Paris cheap who have gone on to win a lot of prize money for their owners
Q: Would you say, based your experience, that every horse or yearling should be inspected personally? And perhaps in this instance technology may not be the best option?
A: Definitely. Your eye doesn’t Lie
Q: And by the same measure, from a breeding perspective, what would you say is the best type of horse which can succeed in becoming the most commercially successful racehorse?
A: Spirit Of Boom will continue to prosper successfully.
