In Conversation With Torryburn Stud Torryburn Homebred Joins The Millionaire's Club, Yet Again
Torryburn a boutique stud in the heart of the thoroughbred country, joined the Millionaire Club when it sold one its yearlings for A$1.2 million to astute buyer James Harron. The colt by I Am Invincible out of the Torryburn mare Mrs Boxall was one of the highest value yearlings on the first day of the Easter Yearling Sale earlier this month. The property itself is steeped in colonial history and is the setting for the inspiration behind one of Australia’s most evocative poems: ‘My Country’ by Dorothea Mackellar. The Impact spoke to stud manager Melissa Copelin about their achievements and their plans going forward:
Q: Is this your first over A$1 million sales this season?
A: Yes, this is our first Million dollar yearling this sales season, last year at Easter we sold a million-dollar colt, so it was fantastic to achieve this again.
Q: Did you expect to achieve this kind of a super result with this yearling?
A: He was a standout individual from birth and we were very confident we had a quality product to show at the sale. As you know there are many hurdles from birth to the sales ring, so to get well over a million was an absolute dream.
Q: What value were you expecting to get for him?
A: We would have been happy with anything over $500k
Q: Although Torryburn had a select draft this year, four out of the five yearlings were sold for much more than the sale average. What would you say was exception about your offering?
A: Going into the sale we had a good draft of yearlings by proven stallions from young well- pedigreed mares. Looking back now and reflecting on the feedback, the three key qualities that made our results soar was Type Temperament and Presentation. Essentially we had what the market wanted.
Q: What sale will Torryburn be showing at next?
A: We are selling some mares for clients at the MM National sale and again next year we will target the three main sales, January MM, Inglis Classic and Inglis Easter
