In Conversation With Mr. John Chalmers, Owner, John Chalmers Bloodstock John Chalmers Bloodstock: Buying The Best At Perth
Chalmers was responsible for a record number of purchases in last year’s Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale last year. The Impact spoke to John Chalmers about his purchases as well as his plans for this year’s edition of the same sale.
Q: Last year you purchased a record number of horses at this sale. Do you have similar plans this year? Did you retain any horses for pin hooking, syndication or racing yourself from last year's purchases?
A: I don’t know about a record. I am an Agent & buy on orders...at this stage not sure how strong I will be. Being an Agent I do not buy on spec & nor do I syndicate. None to race myself, no.
Q: Do you prefer certain stallions or certain parings would all of the horses merit an equal look?
A: No specific sires however naturally look at the proven horses or the new sires that appeal to me.
Q: What do you think of the 2019 Perth Sales Catalogue?
A: No different to usual, whether you are referring to the yearling section or the general section. One has to pick through them as many are breeders culls.
Q: Which sales do you regularly attend? Where should we expect you next?
A: Various sales around Australia...mainly broodmare sales. attending the Inglis Melbourne sales next week
Q: And finally, what are the factors you take into account when buying horses? What is the merit percentage you allocate to pedigree vs. conformation?
A: Whether buying yearlings or mares conformation is most important then of course pedigree comes in to play. Largely depends on the budget of my client.
