Adam Sangster owner of the famous Swettenham Stud, son of racing legend and Coolmore founder Robert Sangster and leading Southern Hemisphere breeder speaks to The Impact about the record-breaking sale of their Zoustar (Zoustar x Queen Of The Creek) to Victorianpinhookers Luke and Mags Anderson of Maluka Farm and the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry.
The A$200,000 filly was purchased in conjunction with Eion Kemp in New Zealand. She will be ideally sold in the Melbourne Premier Sale next year.
Q: Based on the filly's excellent pedigree which type of races does you expect to see her race in?
A: Zoustaris one of the most sort after stallions in the world. His progeny in Australia has been purchased by all leading trainers and Bloodstock agents.
Q: Your stallion Toronado (HighChaparral) has generated a lot of interest. Notably, earlier this year, you sold one of his sons at the New Zealand Bloodstock’s premier Karaka sale for a record-breaking price. Could you tell us more?
A: Swettenham topped the sale in New Zealand with an outstanding physical colt our of Circus Polka, He was purchased by Sir Patrick Hogan of Cambridge Stud fame for A$275,000
Q: How do you plan matings and how far in advance are they planned?
A: When we plan our mating, we make sure the physical attributes of both mare and the stallion will produce a good-looking correct foal.
Pedigree is researched thoroughly making sure that nicks and crosses in their bloodlines are compatible with past success
Q: When your team starts work on sales drafts, how do you prepare the yearling to achieve the best price at the yearling sales?
A: We prepared around 50 yearlings for sale each year at major yearling sales in Australia. Usually, it is a 10-week preparation until he’d yearlings are presented at the sales.
It is highly important if we are looking after a yearling for a client that we constantly keep them updated with their yearlings’ progress to make sure they understand where their yearling will sit price is in the market before the sale.
Q: How would you describe your own personal journey to becoming a thoroughbred industry leader? What was the most exhilarating part of your journey in the thoroughbred industry?
A: My father Robert Sangster was a visionary in the thoroughbred industry globally having raced or bred over 200 Group1 winners and had winners in 22 countries.
Through his guidance and other great mentors and of course learning from my own mistakes Swettenham, Australia is in a very healthy and vibrant position.
With stallions of the calibre of Highland Reel (Galileo), AkeedMofeed (Dubawi) Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) with Toronado, our stallions are proving very popular with commercial breeders.
In July I will be embarking on a bucket list venture “The Sangster Stallion Fund” which we are inviting investors to join us to buy an elite stallion through a unit trust. It will be a very exciting venture with a significant return on investment through the fund.
Readers can find out more about “Sangster Stallion Fund” by contacting Adam Sangster.
The fund involves the purchase of high-quality stallions with the 3 “p” pedigree, performance and physical to go to stud at Swettenham
But it’s the journey not the destination of the investment which will attract individuals into the fund as I will make sure that it is an enjoyable experience.
Q: Do you have some records on your bucket list which you plan to achieve at Swettenham as well?
A: Bucket list is to carry on the tradition of the Sangster family’s involvement in racing and breeding and guide investors into the all-consuming thoroughbred business
