Based in Wilberforce, Hannover Lodge a thriving thoroughbred facility, owned and run by Hinnerk Hueppe, who named the farm as a tribute to his birthplace Hannover, Germany. Although the farm first opened its doors in June 2017, there are always around 100 horses being cared for. The facilities are dedicated to “preparing the elite racehorse” offering pre-training, breaking-in, rehabilitation and spelling. 2019 has seen Hannover lodge have it’s busiest breaking-in season yet.
Everest Diaries speaks to Hueppe about their second draft for the 2019 Inglis Ready 2 Race sale and much more:
Q: You have an excellent draft of horses this year. Please tell us about the highlight lot of your draft?
A: Lot 112 by Mossman x Never (Tale of the Cat, USA) an eye-catching, athletic type of colt who I was lucky enough to have known since it was a weanling and he just continues to impress me.
Q: This will be your second Ready to Race draft for the Inglis Sale- what are your plans for future sales?
A: I want to work towards improving the depth and quality of the drafts I produce, rather than the size going forward. With my key goal to offer a well educated and carefully managed individual.
Q: What sales do you normally aim to attend every year?
A: I usually attend all major yearling sales in NSW, QLD and Victoria.
Q: Do you select horses on type/athleticism or with particular races in mind?
A: Firstly on athleticism and conformation- the balance of the horse,
secondly breeding and distance. Obviously, breeding plays a large role in the potential financial outcome of a sale horse, but I’m a strong believer in the importance of the horses' natural balance and attitude, I have seen great results from horses who on paper may not be setting the world on fire.
Q: Do you follow the progeny and matings of particular broodmares and sires?
A: I always follow progeny of horses I have worked with myself that have impressed me with their intelligence and temperament. I believe that the mare has a huge impact on her progeny.
Q: Although it’s tough to predict, which pedigree lines do you place the most weight on for future successes?
A: I wouldn’t necessarily be looking at a Northern Hemisphere bloodline for a Ready to Race market. I’d always look towards the more classic Southern Hemisphere type breed that Australia has become so well known for producing. My current picks for future stars are Newgate sires Capitalist, Super One and wild card Territories; I’m excited to see what he will produce.
Q: Which was your most favourite horse of all time from your stable and where are they now?
A: Man of Choice (Manhattan Rain). I chose him as a yearling, broke him in and raced him at group one level. He’s now retired and will live with me forever.
Q: What are the two goals on your bucket list to achieve by 2030 in racing?
A: To produce the most consistent drafts and best-educated young horses for the Ready to Race sales, and in general.
