A field of eight was entered Wednesday in Saturday’s US$300,000 Del Mar Debutante, the race that determines the 2-year-old filly champion and is the penultimate of six Grade I events of the Del Mar Racecourse summer meeting. The Debutante has been won by champions such as Songbird, She’s a Tiger, Stardom Bound, Sweet Catomine and Halfbridled since 2000. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, a seven-time winner of the, will send out Debbie Lanni’s Just a Smidge. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Into Mischief purchased for $425,000 at a May sale, Just a Smidge won her racing debut on July 19. Where as, after Spectator’s performance in the Sorrento Stakes (G2), the 7-furlong Debutante is a stepping stone to the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. However, the debut win of Gas Station Sushi may have been the best of the six last-out winners entered, not including Spectator. Southern Equine Stable's Gabrielleelizabeth is the only out-of-towner in the field and is trained by Eric Guillot.
