Review: West Coast Steps Into Arrogate’s Footsteps During Travers
As Arrogate slowly finds his way back into the winner's enclosure, another Baffert trainee decided to follow-in his footsteps. Although West Coast has never raced in a Gr.1, he wouldn't have been up against the Travers’ line-up if the "boss" thought he couldn't crack it. And crack it he did! And In style. West Coast was always expected to do well. There was no hesitation in his understanding of what he was meant to do. He won by a clear 3.5 furlongs beating Gunnevera, who has always done well in Gr.2. The Dialed In colt decided to step up, matching pace with the famous Arrogate's stablemate. And bringing in the trifecta was Irap who has been doing well recently, albeit in Gr.3 races.
This trio, lead by a new star, will now be seen as real contenders for any race by beating the recent Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Preakness Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Jim Dandy winners. What a race!
Good Smaritan placed fifth. And Always Dreaming, must have been day-dreaming to come in at ninth position. He maybe retired to Winstar Farm for the 2018 season.
In the meanwhile, Gary and Mary West's Flatter colt has jet back to Southern California on Monday morning but there are no immediate plans for his next race. Baffert has some interesting decisions to make soon.
