Mendelssohn, the $3 million sale topper at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, has some big horse shoes to fill. Not only did he come with a hefty tag, but the chestnut colt is a half-brother to Beholder, two time Breeders' Cup Distaff winner and four-time Eclipse Award winner. Initially slotted into the Juvenile (Dirt), Trainer Adian O’Brien decided to switch him into the Juvenile Turf at the last minute. He did well in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes where he came in second behind stablemate US Navy Flag. This European raider may be the one to beat.
Untamed Domain earned his place in the starting gate and his travel expenses for the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf by winning the Summer Stakes at Woodbine September 17. Despite weaving through the stretch, he wore down the leaders late to win by a neck. Trainer Graham Motion also trained Untamed Domain’s sire Animal Kingdom, who was second in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Mile after winning the 2011 Kentucky Derby. Hemp Hemp Hurray comes into the race with two brilliant wins from three starts.

Masar comes to the Breeders’ Cup packed with potential. After winning the Solario Stakes, Masar was third in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
Other top European competitors entered in the Juvenile Turf include James Garfield, winner of the Gr.2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes and Beckford, winner of the Gr.2 Railway Stakes

Other strong contenders are U.S.-based Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" qualifiers - Flameaway, who won an off-the-turf running of the Gr.2 Dixiana and Catholic Boy who is undefeated in two starts.
