Preview & Trifecta - The Hong Kong Cup 2017
Werther goes head-to-head with Neorealism
The Hong Kong Cup is the feature race of the afternoon. Werther will start the Hong Kong Cup as a clear favourite following his win in the Jockey Club Cup. There is no doubt that he is the best of the local runners.
Time Warp smashed the 1800m course record when opening his account at Happy Valley with a powerful front-running display. Werther was well suited, beating time warp as he did in the Gr.2 Jockey Club Cup. But Zack Purton will be hard to beat. And if the tempo is soft, expect Time Warp in-front with the intent to claim the crown.
War Decree was classified as ‘the most intriguing horse’ in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic. The lightly-raced 3-year-old War Front colt was testing the waters in America against the best, richest and most-seasoned horses in the world. Ofcourse he placed ninth, but not for a lack of effort. The Adian O’Brien-trained Ballydoyle graduate may just be the horse who leaves them all behind.
Japanese Neorealism was disappointing first-up in the Tenno Sho in Japan, but he beat Werther to win the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong earlier this year. He is definitely not the most consistent horse in the world, but he is capable of a world-class performance on his day and he does have the benefit of Joao Moreira in the saddle.
Poet’s World has form around some of the best horses in Europe and he was sent to Hong following second place finishes in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Champion Stakes at Ascot. He is a horse that still looks to have a fair amount of upside and this is his chance to record a maiden Group 1 win.
The race card of the feature race of the Hong Kong International Races day will be quite the enigma, until the gates open.
