Review: Gr.1 Doomben Cup 2018
Comin’ Through Comes Through For Waller
The son of Fastnet Rock has bounced back after a disappointing Hollindale Stakes’ result to win the Doomben Cup (2018). Comin’ Through gave trainer Chris Waller his fourth Doomben Cup win as well as a double in the race with when stablemate Egg Tart finished second.
The recently gelded horse, ridden by Michael Waller drew away from Egg Tart over the final 200m after coming in the from outside the barrier in the final few lengths. The son of Sebring gave another Waller protégé Tom Melbourne chase throughout the race but Tom weakened in the final turn just as Comin Through shot forward.
For Walker, it was his third Group 1 win of the season.
"I am just pleased he got there in the end for Chris because he's very easy to ride for and gave me no instructions, which gives the jockeys a lot of confidence," Walker said.
Waller said that going ahead Comin’ Through was likely spell with spring in mind, while Egg Tart is expected to continue in Brisbane, competing for the Gr.2 Brisbane Cup.
Jockey Craig Waller described Ambitious as strong on the line and his Doomben Cup ride to give trainer Anthony Freedman food for thought for his spring campaign.
Melbourne mare Abbey Marie did well to finish fourth in her Swan Song while other Japanese bred Satono Rasen landed a respectable seventh after running quite well during the race but tiring out at the end. Perhaps a shorter length will better suit the colt.
