Review: Gr.1 King Stand Stakes 2018
Blue Point Trumps Battaash
Godolphin owned
Blue Point came into his own winning the King's Stand Stakes on day one of Royal Ascot 2018.
Battaash, set a strong pace under champion jockey William Buick-ridden and stayed in the lead. However, Charlie Appleby-trained Blue Point gave chase to Battaash in the final furlong and a half, eventually getting to the lead late on and powering away to win by a length and three quarters.
Mabs Cross came up from behind and ended up in a photo for second with the front-running Battaash while defending champion Lady Aurelia, who came all the way from America was well beaten.
Appleby, registering his fifth success at the Royal Meeting, said in an interview with Timeform magazine: "Full credit has to go to the team at home who have done a fantastic job with Blue Point and getting him back to where he is.
To have a Derby winner and then have a winner at Royal Ascot is great and coming into today, I don't think I could have had Blue Point in any better nick.
Everyone stuck their neck out about Blue Point as a two-year-old. Things have not gone his way in a lot of races, whereas today everything fell right and to make him a Group One winner is very satisfying.
He is a very quick horse, and I was always very comfortable where I was and I knew he would see the race out better than Battaash."
