Review: Gr.1 Dubai Turf
Almond Eye-Kuneida Bid Bonjour To Long champ
Almond Eye remains undefeated in seven continuous starts, the latest one being at Meydan in the Gr.1 Dubai Turf on the Dubai World Cup card.
The daughter of Lord Kanola is regarded as one of the best middle-distance horses. She is the winner of the Japanese Triple Crown (Fillies) and the Gr.1 Japan Cup.
The 4YO travelled well from the start and she showed excellent acceleration to win the 1800m affair in style.
Dubai Turf (2017) winner Vivlos, had the first run to the line, but as the distance shortened Almond Eye’s strides lengthened and she finished the race without even breaking a sweat, while Lord Glitters finished third.
Almond Eye also became the fourth Japanese-trained winner of the race in the last six years following on from Just A Way (2014), Real Steel (2016) and Vivlos (2017).
Her conditioner, Sakae Kunieda, said, “It was a really great race. She broke well, settled well, got a good position and accelerated well to win well. It was the result I thought we could get and I’m happy she proved us right. I was nervous, I’ve lost my voice. Almond Eye can continue my dreams, so next, we’ll go to Europe, our dream is to take her to the Arc.”
The Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s most prestigious race which is held at Longchamp, France, is the likely end-of-season target for Almond Eye.
