1,071 lots were presented during the 2019 Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, which comprised of a spectacular line up of breeding prospects – from star race fillies and top young breeding prospects to proven Group One producers.
Top racemare Missrock topped day one of the sale, followed by Global Glamour on day two, Lipari was the star of day three and finally the dam of this year's Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre topped on the final day
Missrock will head to England, where she will be based at Highclere Stud. It is the intention of the new owner, who wishes to remain private, to use the best available European stallions with a view to try to breed Classic horses.
John and Jake Warren who were bidding via telephone that secured the star mare for A$2.3 million. John Warren is known around the world as the Racing Manager for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Warrens spent recent days on the Gold Coast and were struck with Missrock when they inspected her on the grounds.
"She is one of those mares who doesn’t take much inspecting - she’s an absolute beauty," Jake Warren said. "She fit the bill for us on conformation, she’s a lovely sized mare. She’s very strong and powerful and she has a great action."
"We were just in awe of her and thought she was a lovely type and when you married that up with her pedigree, race record and the fact she is by a top sire - she really floated our boat on all aspects."
"The Danehill blood in Europe mixed with the Sadler’s Wells line has been so successful and so that’s where we’re thinking - it’s very exciting," Warren added.
Presented at the auction by Kingstar Farm for an ownership group headed by Ray and Susie Montague, Missrock was able to make her last major Australian appearance at the same place she made her first - she was a A$500,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for her former trainer Robbie Laing.
Although Ray Montague initially expected “somewhere between A$1.5 and A$2 million”, he was delighted when she was finally knowcked down for the astounding sum of A$2.3 million.
The mare was one of five individual lots to sell for $1 million or more during a spirited opening to the sale.
The second top seller on the day was former sprint sensation Invincible Star who was knocked down to James Bester and Tom Magnier for A$1.45 million. That mare was consigned by Yarraman Park Stud.
The day's selling rounded out with seven stallion nominations sold on behalf of injured jockey Tye Angland. Tye's wife Erin and eldest daughter Lexi were present to see the nominations sell for a total of A$283,500.
Former star race mare Global Glamour topped day two when selling for A$1.55 million. The sale capped a remarkable journey for her large group of local and international female owners. Originally a A$65,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for the syndicate by leading bloodstock agent James Bester, Global Glamour raced to stardom on the track with two Group One wins within a week. She won a number of other feature races under the training of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and retired with earnings of A$1.56 million. With today's A$1.55 million sale price - it's been a A$3.1 million result for the It's All About the Girls syndicate. Coolmore's Tom Magnier teamed up with Baramul Stud's Gerry Harvey and Bester to buy the mare after she was presented unreserved by Widden Stud in foal to their leading young sire Zoustar.
"She has a lot of quality," a delighted Tom Magnier reported. "And she was a great race filly.""We are delighted to be able to get her and to have Gerry involved is fantastic. She will be sent to Justify this spring."
"Global Glamour was bred in Victoria and sold at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, and James O'Brien couldn't have been more proud watching her sell as a broodmare. "There was no possible way that I thought she would make that mark when she was born, but after seeing her racing career evolve, I'm very proud to see that result."
Tom Magnier also snapped up the day's second biggest seller when he went to A$875,000 to secure Extra Olives from the Newgate Consignment. Extra Olives, a multiple Melbourne winner, has produced one foal by Capitalist and was today sold in foal to Yarraman Park Stud's super sire I Am Invincible. The mare, who earned black type with a second placing in the Group Three Vanity Stakes, is from a Sydney winning daughter of former champion Australian filly Alinghi.
Two of the country's top young producing mares were the stars on the Gold Coast as the third day of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale continued its strong momentum.
Day Three:
Top producer, Lipari was the top seller, when she sold to Gerry Harvey's Baramul Stud for A$1.6 million.
Presented by Twin Hills Stud in foal to leading Yarraman Park Stud sire I Am Invincible.The mare, who is the dam of Group One Australian Derby winner Levendi and Group Three winning juvenile Marcel from Madrid, will present her new owner with a foal in early August.
"She's thrown two very good horses," a delighted Gerry Harvey said. "I think she's the best mare in the catalogue."
"I thought she was an outstanding buy and great value and I will send her back to I Am Invincible again this coming season.
"The result was welcomed by Olly Tait from Twin Hills Stud, who purchased the mare before either Levendi or Marcel of Madrid had raced for $170,000."It's a fabulous result," Tait said. "She's a beautiful mare.”
"We bought her here at Magic Millions a couple of years ago and it's been massively exciting since then owning her. Levendi actually won his first race three days after we bought her."
"She's been the best horse we've owned - it's sad to see her go, but we're in the business of selling horses."
Harvey tried to get the day's second biggest seller, the stakes winner and emerging producer Members Joy, but lost out to Aquis Farm who went to A$1.45 million to secure her from the Newgate Consignment. The good-looking grey mare's first foal is the multiple Group Two winner Pure Elation and she will produce a full relation in October.
“She has already produced a high class daughter that has won some proper races. She's a cracker Pure Elation and hopefully she can produce another one like that," ," Aquis' Shane McGrath said.
Erato, presented at the sale by Yarraman Park Stud, sold for A$1.75 million to Yu Long Investments.
"Obviously she's a blue hen," Sam Fairgray said after signing for the top seller.
"It's a great family and she's produced the Blue Diamond winner."
"Mr Zhang was very keen to get her and we are very pleased she will be joining the Yu Long team.
"Erato provided the team from Australian Bloodstock with a dream result. They purchased her for A$120,000 two years ago at the National Broodmare Sale when she was offered through the Godolphin draft.
With her first foal since winning the Blue Diamond Stakes the team decided to offered her in foal to Russian Revolution and it proved a masterstroke.
Widden Stud and leading international bloodstock agent David Redvers teamed up to make their second seven figure purchase for the day when they bought Bonny O'Reilly for A$1.2 million when offered by Glastonbury Farms.A stakes winner, Bonny O'Reilly is due to produce her first foal by Snitzel in August.
Earlier Widden and Redvers teamed up to buy Vezalay from the Newgate Consignment for $1 million. That stakes winner is in foal to I Am Invincible.
Overall, 11 mares sold for A$1 million or more, during the four sales’ days.
