Day Two - Royal Ascot
Regal Is The Word, When It Comes To The Prince Of Wales's Stakes
Prince Of Wales's Stakes has some interesting history and is the first of the two Group One races going to post on day two of the Royal Meeting.
The event was established in 1862, and it was named after the Prince of Wales at that time, the future King Edward VII. The race was discontinued after World War II, when there was no Prince of Wales. It returned in 1968, a year before the investiture of Prince Charles.
Sir Michael Stoute trained Poet's Word's win last year gave him his 76th victory at Royal Ascot, making him the most successful trainer in the meeting's history. At Royal Ascot on 20 June Poet's Word started 11/2 second favourite behind Cracksman in a seven-runner field for the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes which also included Hawkbill and Cliffs of Moher. After being restrained by James Doyle in fifth place he made a forward move approaching the straight, took the lead a furlong out and drew away from his rivals to win by two and a quarter lengths from Cracksman.
This year Poet's Word is not in the running, but we have some world class performers out to win big.
Sea Of Class who was unbeaten in the four Group-One starts post her debut at Newmarket prior to her gallant Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe runner-up finish behind Enable where she was denied only by a head. However William Haggas’ charge may not play well on a soft ground.
Waldgeist meanwhile has tied up three Group One races at the top level when she returned to the track with a superb win in the Gr.1 Prix Ganay. The Galileo entire's form suggest that she is the one to beat.
Crystal Ocean got has won two successive wins under his belt this season - the Gordon Richards Stakes in April and the Al Rayyan Stakes last month. He is a very smart performer and the soft ground ought not to faze him, but may lack the class to win a Group One.
Magical the Galileo filly hopes to extend her unbeaten sequence to 4-4 this term. But she deserved to win the three she did, with no top-class opposition, as she will undoubtedly face in this one. She has improved race after race.
Regal Reality delayed the start time in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown but was a world-class professional in the race itself. It was his first trip over a mile but the Sir Stoute trained entire squashed all doubts about his stamina. This may be a big leap in class for the lightly raced Intello colt but he will be looking to emulate Poet’s Word by completing the same double.
