Review: Gr.1 Queens Plate
One Bad Boy Takes Gr.1 Queen's Plate
California raider One Bad Boy took the lead at the beginning and stayed ahead of the game, romping to victory in the CA$1,007,200 (US$769,302) Gr.1 Queen's Plate Stakes.
The 1 1/4-mile opening leg of the Canadian Triple Crown for Canadian-bred 3YOs was the first Canadian start for the California-based trainer Richard Baltas, who conditions One Bad Boy for Steve Young’s Sayjay Racing, Greg Hall, and Brooke Hubbard (who also serves as Racing Manager for Sayjay Racing).
The ridgling landed second place in his last start came off a second-place finish in the Alcatraz Stakes.
Interestingly jockey Flavien Prat winner of this year's Gr.1 Kentucky Derby (when Country House was elevated to first place), became the first jockey to win both the Kentucky Derby and Queen's Plate since 1998.
"I won the Derby and the Queen's Plate this year," Prat said. "It's an amazing year so far for me.
Avie's Flatter broke from the outside post in the 14-horse field but jockey Javier Castellano quickly settled the into second behind One Bad Boy. And the two matched foot-for-foot until One Bad Boy took the lead in the stretch for a 3 1/2-length win on Woodbine's Tapeta course.
Tone Broke finished third 160th running of North America's oldest annually run race.
The complexion of the Queen's Plate was altered at the outset when Skywire, did not get away alertly and then was hampered badly by an inward-breaking Tone Broke.
The remainder of the field, in order of finish, was: He's a Macho Man; Desert Ride; Lucas n' Lori; Federal Law; Pay for Peace; Rising Star; Krachenwagen; Skywire; Suitedconnected; Moon Swings; and Jammin Still.
